  1. Keep a paper with questions handy at all times since most phone inte1rviews are not scheduled.
  2. Remember to smile when you are speaking. It comes through the phone.
  3. Remember the Nurse Manager can’t see your body language so professionalism and/or a monotone voice can leave the Nurse Manager unsure of your interest. Be professional but it is ok to let your personality come through.
  4. Always ask questions at the end of the interview to show interest:
    • What type of orientation will I receive?
    • What computer charting system do you use?
    • Could you tell me about the scheduling process?
    • What is the weekend and holiday requirements?
    • Are there CNAs and Unit Secretaries to assist on the unit?
    • What is the average nurse to patient ration on your unit?
    • Do you require particular scrub colors on your unit?
  5. If the job sound like something you want, don’t be afraid to ask for the job:
    • This sounds like a great opportunity and unit, I would be interested in moving forward.
    • This sounds like a wonderful opportunity, what are the next steps?
    • I am very interested in coming to work on your unit. Is it ok to contact my agency about housing options locally?
  6. Remember to always discuss any time off and/or certain days you are not available to work, during the interview. The Nurse Manager will be the only one to approve this, not the travel company. It is not uncommon for Nurse Managers to not approve time off after the offer is made.
  7. Toot your own horn! Beep…Beep! This may be uncomfortable but it is the time to do it.
