10 Reasons Nurses Turn to a Travel Career

Take the first step with Go Healthcare Staffing

If you love to travel, meet new people and explore new places, then travel nursing might be a great path for your career. And unfortunately, many nurses face “office politics” and drama that can make going to work every day a struggle. This causes nurses to get frustrated and burnt out in staff positions. While not all situations are like this, if you aren’t satisfied in your current facility, it might be a good time to explore the lifestyle of a travel nurse.

Our team has decades of combined experience in the travel nurse and staffing industry. We know how important it is to match qualified candidates with rewarding assignments. In fact, Go Healthcare recruiters are committed to your success by:

  • treating everyone with respect.
  • appreciating the job, you do as a travel nurse.
  • being a compassionate listener.
  • accepting responsibility to resolve problems/issues when they happen.
  • supporting you throughout your travel assignment to make sure you are getting the most out of your experience.
  • truth and transparency in our words and our action.

Here are 10 great reasons nurses choose a travel career:

1. Competitive Compensation

Go Healthcare Staffing is known in the industry for offering competitive pay and benefits. You are eligible for healthcare insurance from “day one” of your contract. In addition, you can participate in 401K savings plans and earn bonuses for hours worked. Reimbursement for new licensure costs as well as pre-approved continuing education expenses is also available.

2. Professional Guidance

Recruiters play a key role from beginning to end for every travel nurse. As you get started, our recruiters will introduce you to the world of travel nursing with detailed explanations about general day-to-day life. They will also answer questions about pay packages, housing, taxes, jobs, contracts and more. Our goal is to get to know you on a more personal level and really understand what travelers are looking for in an assignment. And, we are with you for the long haul. Our recruiters help you plan for your next assignment well in advance so you have a reliable plan for locations and income.

3. Travel the Country

What’s more adventurous than traveling from state to state and town to town every couple of months or so? One of the biggest attractions for nurses to a travel career is seeing so many places…while you are still earning income. Travel nurses can go just about anywhere, whether you like the beach, the mountains, the lakes, or the dessert, all you have to do is ask. And there are more perks. As you take on your travel assignments, you’ll get to try new restaurants, coffee shops, visit museums, parks and enjoy unlimited new experiences. So, get ready to match your next assignment to your favorite weather, hobbies, and interests.

4. Professional Growth and Resume Building

Travel nursing affords you the opportunity to build your resume with additional and varied experience. By taking different assignments, you will deal with unpredictable situations, special cases, and operations at a variety of facilities. By traveling, you gain exposure to different environments and management styles with a chance to learn new skills, processes, and equipment. In addition, your ability to be flexible and perform in any setting will increase your appeal to new employers.

5. Relocation Options

Contemplating a permanent move, but not sure where you want to land? Travel assignments are a great way to test out the area before making a big commitment. Thirteen-week assignments are a great way to spend time in your prospective town or city before uprooting your current life. It’s a great way to learn about the community, amenities, climate, and more.

6. More time with Family and Friends

Usually travel assignments mean you will be away from family and friends, and likely missing them for a while. However, you can actually spend more time with family and friends who live away from your hometown. If your cousins, or college friends, neighbors, whomever, have spread out across the country, take on a travel assignment nearby and reconnect.

7. Increase your income opportunity

The average travel nurse salary could reach double what a regular licensed nurse earns (Source: Payscale.com). If you are looking to increase your income, you can scout out assignments with competitive wages or other bonuses due to an urgent need. In addition to an attractive base salary, there may also be tax advantages with non-taxable reimbursements and stipends.

8. Lifestyle

Flexibility and freedom are some favorite perks for travel nurses. Unlike a staff position where your vacation time is limited and regulated, travel nurses have the flexibility to choose how much they want to work, when, and where. This also gives you the ability to be near family when they need you most.

9. Rewarding Environment

Long-term positions in a facility are often riddled with hospital politics, management issues, and drama. Short-term travel nursing contracts drastically reduce the potential for those stressors. With less energy spent on navigating a challenging environment, you can focus on what brought you to your profession—patient care. What’s more, your physical and emotional state will benefit from a healthy surrounding helping to prevent burnout.

10. Meeting New People and Expanding Your Network

The travel nurse lifestyle means that you can meet so many new people. Literally at every turn there is an opportunity to get to know a new friend, professional mentor, romantic interest, fellow hobbyist, and more. Of course, you’ll meet new colleagues at your facility and then there’s plenty of social options outside of work. It’s so exciting to explore different places, cultures, neighborhoods, and interests with new people.

9 Yoga Poses for Nurses

Easy stretches and yoga poses you can incorporate in your daily routine.

Nurses work long hours and spend the majority of time on their feet—standing, walking, even running. Add to that the physical effort that entails bending, lifting, twisting, and countless repetitive motions. The result? Nurses often suffer from injuries that include sprains, strains, back injuries, and sore muscles. There are some simple steps you can take to help prevent harm and reduce the strain on your shoulders, back, neck, and arms.

Let’s start by understanding the risk. Less flexible muscles restrict mobility, which in turn increases the likelihood of sprains and strains. In contrast, well-stretched muscles are less prone to injury. Stretching before and after your shift will help reduce the tension felt during and after a long workday. These low impact poses, which can be done at home, will drastically increase stamina and strength as well as help decrease muscle aches associated with overworked, weaker muscles.

The benefits of yoga and simple stretching include:

  • Increased circulation and blood flow
  • Better flexibility
  • Improved posture
  • Pain relief
  • Increased oxygen flow

We know you have a hectic schedule and work long hours, however, devoting just a small amount of time to a consistent routine can really payoff. Try these tips to get on a path to success:

  • Stretch at least once per day
  • Wear comfortable shoes
  • Don’t force your body into awkward positions
  • If the stretch is painful, stop and revisit your technique
  • Always move into your stretch gradually
  • Start by holding stretches for a short time, then gradually build
  • Stretch your entire body
  • Breathe deeply and relax your body
  • Repeat the stretch at least once to gain range of motion

Our team has gathered some very effective yoga poses that work wonders for nurses who are on their feet all day. These are designed to help alleviate tension and build stamina in your back, hips, arms, neck and shoulders. Don’t ever attempt an exercise that makes you unstable or causes pain. If you have any physical concerns about any positions or feel unsure about your ability, please consult with your doctor for professional advice.

9 stretches and yoga poses to incorporate into your daily routine:

  1. Split Squats

Put one leg forward and take the other leg back to give you a long stance. When in this position slowly drop straight down until your back knee touches the floor and you can feel your thigh in your front leg stretching. Slowly rise up again and repeat with your legs reversed. Doing this a few times can help to relieve pain in your legs and strengthen your thigh muscles. Watch video here.

2. Crescent Moon Pose

Crescent moon pose may also be referred to by its Sanskrit name, Anjaneyasana. Stand normally and raise your arms above your head until the palms touch, making sure your keep your arms straight. Bend to your right, slowly, until you can feel the muscles on the left side of your body stretching. Try to keep the rest of your body as still as possible and don’t push your hips to the left. Simply bend until you feel a slight stretch. Hold this pose for ten seconds and then slowly return to standing straight. Then bend to the left. Watch video here.

3. Triceps Stretch

Stand tall with feet hip-width apart, arms extended overhead. Bend your right elbow and reach your right hand to touch the top middle of your back. Reach your left hand overhead and grasp just below your right elbow. Gently pull your right elbow down and toward your head.

Switch arms and repeat. Stretches neck, shoulders, back, triceps

5. Butterfly Pose

Butterfly Pose or Baddha Konasana, is a hip opener. Sit tall on the floor with the soles of your feet together, knees bent out to sides. Hold onto your ankles or feet, engage your abs, and slowly lower your body toward your feet as far as you can while pressing your knees toward the floor. If you’re too tight to bend over, simply press your knees down. Watch video here.

6. Lunging Hip Flexor Stretch

Kneel on your left knee. Place your right foot flat on the floor in front of you, knee bent. Lean forward, stretching your left hip toward the floor. Squeeze your butt; this will allow you to stretch your hip flexor even more. Switch sides and repeat. Watch video here.

7. Tree Pose

Tree pose, also known as Vrikshasana or Vrksasana (from the Sanskrit words “vrksa” meaning “tree,” and “asana” meaning “pose”), is a standing pose in yoga that requires balance and coordination. Standing on one leg, raise the other leg and place your foot on the inside of your thigh. If you can’t get your leg that high, the place your foot against your calf. Avoid placing you foot in the knee area. Raise your arms above your head and bring your palms together, keeping your arm straight. Hold this pose for ten seconds and then slowly lower your arms and leg. Repeat standing on the other leg. Watch video here.

8. Fold Forwards

Uttanasana or standing forward fold helps stretch your back and feels great after a long 12-shift. Stand with your legs shoulder width apart with your knees slightly bent. Once in this position slowly fold yourself forwards until you feel the stretch in your back. Don’t push yourself to go further forward just let your arms hang down in front of you and feel your back and legs stretching. Hold it for twenty to forty seconds and then slowly roll back up to standing. Watch video here.

9. The Plank

The plank or Phalakasana, in one static position works the entire body. It is also designed to help strengthen your core muscles. Lie on your front in the press up position, only have your forearms pressed flat on the floor. Lift your body off the floor and keeping it in a straight line, including your neck and head. Hold it for as long as you can and lower yourself back to the floor. Watch video here.

15 Helpful Tips for New Travel Nurses

Great tips and advice for new travel nurses from the the Go Healthcare Team

Congratulations on your decision become a travel nurse, we hope your new career path is off to a great start! The nursing profession is challenging enough and we understand that change can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. The good news is…we expect you will soon be enjoying all the perks that being a traveler has to offer. After years of working with travel nurses across the country, our Go Team has put together a few tips to help you get started on the right path.

Going “on the road” as a travel nurse

  1. Be flexible– Prepare yourself for the inevitable differences in procedures and processes at different hospitals. Unless you feel there is a concern for safety, adhere to the policies in place even if you are accustomed to something else.
  2. Get Rest– You are in one of the most demanding fields with enormous physical and emotional aspects as well as stress and responsibility day in and day out. Getting enough rest is imperative to help with good decision-making, energy, and attitude.
  3. It’s ok to ask– A new job, a new town, and new home, you are facing an abundance of uncertainty. Seek out people you trust, who are knowledgeable and able to help when you are looking for answers. If it’s too soon to have acquaintances, research reliable sources online.
  4. Understand your contract– Head into your new assignment prepared for the location, hours, benefits, pay, and housing parameters. Read your contract carefully and reach out to your Recruitment Manager or Placement Team if you have questions.
  5. Avoid the mundane– Try to avoid visiting, eating, and shopping at the same places all the time. It’s fine to have a few favorites, but enjoying a variety of experiences will help with a healthy adjustment.
  6. Stay sharp– Stay alert at all times and be street smart. Be very aware of your surroundings, try to stay in well-lit areas, walk with a friend if you are nervous, avoid flaunting valuable jewelry and clothing, cover valuables inside your car, and consider using the location tracking option on your phone with a family member. And, follow the advice from those who know the area well.
  7. Shut the work door– It is especially difficult for nurses to leave work at work. Clocking out doesn’t magically turn off everything you faced during the day. However, a healthy work-life balance is very important. Try your best to disconnect/distract from the daily stresses and enjoy your personal time.
  8. Prepare early for your next assignment– you already know that your assignment is temporary and the expected end date. Start thinking early about your next move and what you want to do. Expect to have the discussion on whether you want to extend or look for your next travel assignment around 5-6 weeks before your actual end date. Check out our 13 week planning calendar to stay on top of your travel assignment planning: planning calendar.
  9. Keep learning– It’s so important for travel nurses to stay competitive. One of the best ways is to learn something new. Healthcare is always evolving and changing, growing as a nurse with those changes will help you be successful. Look for educational opportunities while on every assignment.
  10. Find a mentor– Having a mentor is a great way to get acclimated to your new environment. Maybe with permission you can shadow someone, or just find a colleague that you look up to for advice and direction. Mentors are a fantastic resource to help you get adjusted and keep learning.
  11. Expand your network– It can often get lonely as a traveler. Technology has made it possible to connect to virtually anyone, anywhere. Seek out camaraderie from fellow travelers, look for social media groups such as our own Inner Circle Group on Facebook to connect with other Go Healthcare Travelers. Feeling Homesick While on Assignment

Feeling homesick? You’re not alone. Try these 12 tips

As a traveler, you get to enjoy the excitement of new places, new people, new patients, and new routines. You probably chose travel nursing because you thrive on variety. In the midst of all this adventure, however, it’s also completely normal to feel a bit homesick. Everyone has the need for stability and a support system that includes familiarity and trust. It can be difficult to satisfy these needs when you just arrived in a new city. You might not see any familiar faces and it takes time to build confidence with new acquaintances.

Homesickness is recognized as a feeling of stress or anxiety caused by separation from people and places that you know while being outside of your comfort zone. Here are some common symptoms:

  • irregular sleep patterns
  • feeling angry, nervous or sad
  • feeling isolated or lonely
  • feeling overwhelmed, insecure, anxious or panicky
  • frequent or more severe headaches
  • feeling nauseous or a lack of appetite

Sometimes these feelings worsen after the hectic holiday season—when social events quiet down—or around special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, etc. Even though your transition to a new environment can easily make you feel homesick, there are ways to help you cope. The most important thing is to recognize that your feelings are legitimate, then take a few steps to treat yourself just as you would treat your patients. We’ve put together a dozen things you can do to help ease homesickness:

  1. Take home with you– You might be in a new place, but taking a few favorite items with you can add the personal touch that makes a huge difference. Photos, trinkets, curtains, pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, a special coffee mug are all great ways to make a place your own.
  2. Be honest– Share when you are lonely, sad, stressed as well as happy or excited with those you turn to for support. This will help everyone be more open about their own feelings and keep a special connection regardless of location.
  3. Let it out- Don’t try to keep everything bottled up inside. It’s much healthier to let out your emotions. There may be days when you really need to have a good cry, scream in your pillow, punch a cushion, go running, whatever helps you release some of that frustration and tension.
  4. Stay well- Take care of yourself by eating well, exercising, and try to get enough sleep.
  5. Get in a groove- Establish a routine as soon as possible. Ensure you get enough sleep and create a work-leisure balance. Predictability helps us feel secure.
  6. Go out– Avoid the temptation to stay in, isolated and avoid social contact. The faster you meet people and discover things to do, the sooner you will feel more at ease.
  7. Utilize technology- There are so many options to stay in touch today. Take advantage of real-time face-to-face opportunities with Facetime, Zoom, Skype. Consider sending video messages and don’t forget to send photos and videos of your adventures to loved ones back home.
  8. Feed your interests– Resurrect an old hobby, get involved in new activities, try a sport, seek out local organizations and events.
  9. Keep your glass half full– Take time to appreciate the positive aspects of your new situation. Traveling comes with a lot of perks. Focus on the good by making a list of all the things you like about traveling and your new assignment. Journaling is an excellent way to acknowledge gratefulness and organize your thoughts.
  10.  Host guests– Invite your family and friends to come and visit.
  11. Keep it light– Don’t reserve all your conversations for big news, heavy topics, or critical decision-making. Be sure you connect with friends and family about the little things too. Talk about the weather, a funny joke, or current events to keep things interesting.
  12. Set expectations– Understand the feeling homesick is normal. Don’t beat yourself up if you feel down or miss your friends and family back home. Take time (but not too much) to allow yourself to reflect, be sad, and think through how to feel better. And know that in time, things will get better.

Homesickness should pass in time. And, it should not be so severe that you become unable to carry out your daily responsibilities. If you are struggling with feelings that are so intense that you find it difficult to cope, reach out for help right away. Seek a local counselor or inquire at your hospital for assistance. There are also a variety of depression hotline numbers available to anyone across the country who is in need. Examples include:

  • National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255
  • Samaritans: 1-877-870-4673
  • National Hopeline Network: 1-800-442-4673
  • Veterans Crisis Line: 1-800-273-8255

There might be some incredible upside to your new assignment. This is a great chance to celebrate “you time.” Eat the things you like, go to places that interest you, watch your favorite movies, take a nap, go to bed early, sleep in, binge your favorite TV series, buy some special chocolates—you will be surprised how a little self-indulgence can cheer you.

Oh the Places You’ll Go in 2023!

Where do you want to go?

Few career paths offer the flexibility and versatility as travel nursing. Which means that travelers can pick where and when they want to work. Maybe you love being near the beach, or skiing the slopes, or even boating on a crystal clear lake—wherever you want to be, there are a few things you should consider.

Before your next contract, here are 10 factors to think about:

1.Climate– what type of weather is typical for the time you intend to be in the location? This is especially true for cold areas with ice and snow, will your vehicle be appropriate?

2. Proximity– how close is the location to your family, friends, loved ones? Don’t just think in terms of miles, think about ease of travel (airports, train stations) and costs to travel if you want to visit.

3. Demographics– what is the median age? What percentage of the residents are single? Married? Would it be helpful to know a second language?

4. Lifestyle– what leisure activities are available near your hospital? How about restaurants, night life, shopping?

5. Housing– what type of available housing is most popular? Will you rent a room in a house, a full apartment, or perhaps a RV park? Even more importantly, what are the housing costs and how does that match up with your stipend? Will you need a roommate? Check out: Travel Nursing Housing Options

6. Pet environment– if you are traveling with a cat or dog, you’ll need to make sure the area or your housing is pet friendly. And, particularly for dogs, you may want to scout out dog parks, doggy sitters and if the area is accommodating.

7. Public transportation– many times it is unrealistic and expensive to commute with your own vehicle. Will you need public transportation? What is the reputation of the public transit system and what are the fees?

8. Crime rates– sadly this is a reality in any location. Be sure you investigate and select an area that meets your comfort level.

9. Overall cost of living– you will quickly find that gas prices, groceries, utilities, and numerous items beyond rent will vary significantly by location. Be sure to research these costs and ensure your salary (and savings if you choose to use) will meet your standard of living goals.

10. Personal ambitions– use this an opportunity to check a few things off your bucket list. Maybe you have wanted to see the Grand Canyon, climb a particular mountain, or surf at an exceptional beach. Maybe you have always been drawn to a particular area because of the architecture or history. Take time to research your special places and evaluate if there is a practical choice for your next assignment. Check out: List of Travel Jobs.

We encourage travelers to make an ambitious start to 2023. Take advantage of your unique career and choose a great location for your next assignment. Use the list above as a guide, and understand that some items will be more important to you than others. Then, call on the dedicated team at Go Healthcare to match you with the perfect assignment.
