Top Ten Picks for a Place to Call Home

Travel nurse guide to temporary housing

There’s nothing quite like the feeling when you are about to set out on an assignment in a city you have always imagined visiting. But the truth is, you aren’t just visiting.  As a travel nurse, your assignments span several weeks and your stay is more than a mere vacation. You need to find a place that feels like home and gives you comfort and security after a demanding workday.

Getting Started

Chances are, you are working within a budget based on your housing stipend. Also, keep in mind that rental agreements vary. It’s best to read all of the fine print to fully understand your financial obligations regarding minimum stay, late penalties, fees for utilities, pet deposit and fees, as well as cleaning fees upon move out. Be sure to also consider the security deposit, background check fees, booking fee and possible guest fees to accurately calculate the total cost of your entire stay.

What’s more, you need to create a check list of the must haves, nice to have, and things you can live without. For example, most travel nurses choose furnished housing. This alleviates the cost and hassle of moving large items on a regular basis. With that in mind, what exactly will you bring to your new home? Here’s a brief list to get you started on what to consider in your new place. Does the rental offer:

  • Major appliances
  • Small appliances (microwave, coffee maker, toaster, blender)
  • Kitchenware (pots, pans, cooking utensils, silverware)
  • Bedding/linens
  • Towels
  • Hairdryer
  • Paper products (paper towels, tissues, toilet paper)
  • Television with cable or streaming service
  • Internet with WiFi
  • Washer and dryer (in the unit or on-site)
  • Parking (covered, assigned, free or fee)
  • Security (gate, doorman, alarm system)
  • Thermostat control (tenant or landlord?)
  • Pet policy (deposit and extra cleaning fees)
  • Contact free check in

Additional Advice

Facebook groups can be an incredible resource for temporary housing. It can also be a good way for travelers to save money by working directly with the property owners. However, travelers should always exercise caution whenever exchanging information with anyone found on Facebook. These “private” hosts are not vetted or background checked. There is also no company backing up their claims or offering a guarantee on your booking. Be vigilant about sharing personal information or payment methods over Facebook.

Craigslist is notorious for poor security, scammers, fake users, bogus posts and other issues. There is barely any moderation on the site and minimal authenticity. Reviews also suggest that Craigslist support will be scarce if you encounter an issue. Consider avoiding this site in lieu of more secure and reliable options.

The team at Go Healthcare Staffing also recommends travelers consider renters insurance. A simple web search will return many affordable options from reputable firms for insurance policies that protect your personal belongings. This is especially helpful if you travel with computers, laptops, expensive electronics, etc. and you want protection from fire or theft. You may also want to explore insurance options that protect you if you accidentally damage the rental unit or the furnishings. Look for good value coverage and a deductible that works best for you.

Start Your 2023 Travel Nurse Career

If your new year resolutions include: “a new change”, “a different job” and “travel more”, it’s time to look at travel nursing as your next step.

Travel nurses are in high demand with competitive pay and the best part, you choose where you want to work. Now is a great time to start traveling.

Many nurses choose a travel path to avoid “hospital politics” at a current job. Others want to see the country or relocate or even spend time with friends and family who reside in another state. Sometimes travel assignments are a great way to test drive a new city before a permanent move. And, every traveler gets to meet new people and make lasting connections across the country. All travelers build up their resume through assignments that offer new and varied experiences with increased income opportunities.

How to Start Travel Nursing in 2023.

What does it take to be a travel nurse? Don’t let the eligibility requirements overwhelm you, there are some very simple steps to consider when starting out on a travel career. These criteria are not only based on Joint Commission requirements, but also on what most hospital clients look for in an RN Travel candidate.

1.  Is your nursing license active and in good standing?

Your nursing license must be active in the state that you are currently working in. An online verification process will a part of your application. Any type of “hit” on your nursing license must be disclosed upfront and may hinder your eligibility to travel.

2. Do you have at least two years of experience as a Registered Nurse?

To be a successful, we advise any nurse interested to at least have 2 years of nursing experience before venturing out into travel nursing.

3.  Do you have at least one year current or recent experience in the specialty area you want to apply for?

Nurses are expected to “hit the ground running” almost immediately when on a travel assignment. Strong clinical specialty is a “must” to be a successful nurse traveler.

4.  Is your BLS card active and issued from the American Heart Association?

Only AHA issued BCLS cards are accepted as part of our Joint Commission requirements. To find a Training Center or to renew your AHA BLS card, check out the American Heart Association CPR site

5.  Have you maintained (currently active) your ACLS, PALS and TNCC certifications?

Along with an active BLS card, you will also be asked to submit additional certifications specific to your specialty (if applicable) such as ACLS or PALS, NIHSS, TNCC among others. It is best to renew any certifications before you start your travel nursing process.

6.  Are you able to provide two professional references within the past two years from a nursing supervisor?

As part of our screening, we will need to contact 2 professional references from current and previous employer(s) within the last two years.

 7. Is your resume up-to-date or do you have your work experience readily organized to complete an online application?

A solid clinical work history up to 7 years will be required and it may include your educational background.

8. Are your health/medical records up-to-date?

Your vaccination records including varicella, MMR and COVID will be required.

9. Are you ok with health and background screening?

Before you start any travel contract, expect that a physical, a drug screen and a comprehensive background check will need to be completed.

10. Do you have reliable transportation?

A travel nurse assignment or contract by definition must be at least 50 miles from your permanent residence. You will need a mode of transportation that can take you from one travel contract to the next.

If you answered “Yes” to questions above, you are ready-to-GO as a travel nurse

At Go Healthcare Staffing, I am part of team of healthcare travel professionals committed to our travel nurses. We are all dedicated not only to helping our nurses find the perfect travel contract, but making sure they are supported and appreciated throughout their assignment. Staying Healthy through this Holiday Season

The “to-do” list is cluttered with shopping, wrapping, shipping, and decorating, oh my!

The holidays are upon us and that means a joyous season of family, friends, food and fun. It also means the days seem to get more and more hectic while feeling shorter and shorter. We understand that however you choose to celebrate, the excitement can also bring on unwanted stress.

The reality of the holidays for nurse travelers.

The holidays is a time of added pressure for traveler nurses. On top of the “busyness” of the traditional holiday schedule, you will be faced with working extra shifts to cover and most likely work on the actual holidays. As you know, the holiday season is notorious for the common cold, flu, stomach virus, headaches, anxiety, depression, fatigue, insomnia, and general irritability. Unfortunately, it’s virtually impossible to eliminate every factor to protect yourself. Busy schedules lead to less sleep, less time can lead to poor diets and dehydration, a weakened immune system increases vulnerability to common illnesses. What’s more, all the added pressure can increase anxiety and even bring on mild depression.  It is possible to combat these threats with several steps and precautions to stay well and enjoy this special time.

Make “self care” a priority.

Yes, we know your patients are a priority and you care about your co-workers, but you must first take care of yourself. By realizing that your own well-being is the key to being your best for others will keep you on a positive path. The same preventive medicine you preach to your patients also applies to you. And while we aren’t prescribing any medication, we are suggesting some simple ways to put your health at the top of this year’s holiday list.

It’s never too early or too late to focus on some simple steps to improve your health. While the holiday season brings on unique challenges, staying healthy should be a year-round initiative.

Here are some practical tips that are so important to your mental and physical fitness.

1. Get Enough Sleep

Truth is, everyone has a unique sleep meter. Some people need eight hours while some do just fine on five. Look at your own sleep patterns. If you are sluggish, struggle to wake up in the morning, or get drowsy soon after starting your day—you might need more sleep. Try to carve out a nap or better yet, additional hours in your core sleep schedule. Don’t worry if your slumber doesn’t take place during traditional night hours, focus on getting quality sleep when and wherever you can.

2. Get Organized

This might seem far-fetched, but in fact, being disorganized can be very draining. Rushing around, missing deadlines, being late, making several trips because you forget something, and even just corralling your scattered thoughts requires energy. The energy is mental and physical, both depleting your ability to remain alert and savvy. Create checklists, document schedules, set reminders, and most importantly—establish boundaries. Don’t try to accomplish six hours of activities and tasks in thirty minutes. If you are practical about your goals and stay organized then you will inevitably increase efficiencies. As you are better organized, tasks are better managed and this reduces stress.

3. Eat and Drink with a Purpose

How many times have you reminded your patients how important a well-balanced diet is to their health? How many times have you told yourself this same advice? Travel nurses are known for grabbing quick snacks, missing meals and forgetting about hydration. This all contributes to the health of your immune system. Choose your food and beverage options with the goal of boosting your ability to fight germs. Eat a well-balanced diet and opt for water and electrolytes to stay hydrated.

4. Mind Your Mental and Emotional State

Be sure your arsenal is full of techniques for relieving stress. Relaxing means different things to different people, and the same goes for travel nurses. Perhaps you like to escape by reading a book and letting your mind carry you off to some romantic getaway. Others may prefer a favorite movie or comedy series. Yoga, meditation, breathing, and visualization exercises are also very effective favorites. Create a playlist with soothing sounds and music that always at the ready. You may also enjoy the Calm app which offers a full menu of relaxation options. Be sure to find some quiet time every day to unwind and recharge.

5. Stay Active, Exercise

Despite your busy day, we encourage you to find even fifteen minutes a day to stretch, walk, job, skip, even a few jumping jacks will help. Physical activity can also boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and overall energy—the perfect combination for travels nurses during the holidays. Keep in mind your personal ability and consult with your medical advisor if you are unsure of safe activities.

These are just some of the ways you can help reduce stress and the risk of getting run down during the holidays.

We encourage all of our travelers to keep your health a priority and seek advice and council from a professional if you ever feel too overwhelmed to cope successfully. As always, we are a text and a phone call away if we can provide any help while you’re on assignment with us.

Travel Nursing Assignment: 13 Weeks in Boston, Massachusetts

You cannot be in Boston on a travel nursing contract without immersing yourself in all that Boston has to offer. “Beantown is so walkable and there is no shortage of things to see and do on your days off.

Take advantage of this “must go do/see list” that we have put together.

1. Catch a ball game at Fenway Park

Whether you are a baseball fan or not, there is something to be revered about catching a Boston Red Sox game in Fenway.  The baseball stadium, like Boston itself is rich with history.  Unlike the new mega sports stadiums around the country, Fenway is as “vintage” as they come.  It is a must do, but do check out when the Sox are in town here

2. Walk the Freedom Trail

Interested in learning more about how America came to be? The Freedom Trail helps tell the story of the American revolution by taking you past 16 significant history markers such as museums, churches, meeting houses and burying grounds. It’s typical to start your route at Boston Common but wherever you see the brick path throughout the city, follow along to expand your history knowledge and see unique sites!
